“The child who is in the happy position of being able to listen to the fairy story- inasmuch as it is not distorted by alterations- lives so fully in the content of the pictures that any explanation is unnecessary and would be quite a mistake. The grown-up, however, should bear in full consciousness the content offered the child through the story, knowing that it is not a fantastic or beautiful and poetic lie, but a truthful imagination of the path of human evolution.” Norbert Glas
Jack and the Dancing Trees
“Stories are told eye to eye, mind to mind, and heart to heart.” – Scottish Traveller Proverb
The tradition of all ages gathering together for stories and music lives on. I delight in facilitating and joining such gatherings, sharing the art and craft of learning and telling stories. In musical collaboration with the illustrious Dr. Lawrence Joseph Glatt (as featured on his YouTube channel Glatitude), here is a much loved Scottish Traveller story, Jack and the Dancing Trees. With thanks to Alette Willis and Allison Galbraith for their version of this story in their beautiful book Dancing With Trees.
Adults love to hear stories too. The ancient Greek myth Psyche and Eros is so full of wisdom it has been called a map of love. With gratitude to the Canada Council for the Arts for their support, wondrous musicians Maryem Tollar and Sophia Grigoriadis collaborated with me to create this beautiful story music. Our full performance is 90 minutes including intermission, and is a pleasure to perform live.
